The Gotham Book Prize announced for the first time two winners of the third annual 2023 prize: Stories from the Tenants Downstairs by Sidik Fofana and The Sewing Girl’s Tale by John Wood Sweet. The authors of the two winning books split the increased $70,000 prize, and they were honored at a celebration at P&T Knitwear on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Andrea Elliott's Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City, an in-depth portrait of New York and the struggles and achievements of a Black girl from Brooklyn, won the $50,000 Gotham Book Prize for outstanding works about the city.

2021
The Gotham Book Prize, an annual award created to encourage and honor writing about New York City in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, announced that James McBride was selected as the winner of the first annual 2021 Gotham Book Prize for Deacon King Kong. A jury made up of leading New Yorkers nominated a shortlist of ten books last summer and determined McBride's novel best captured the hardship and compassion of living in New York City.
